To contribute towards reduction of the burden of SCD in Sub Saharan Africa ( SSA) Vision SPARCO's vision is to transform the health of individuals with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in SSA through the establishment of a robust and portable framework for research and healthcare in SCD. The project is a tri-country collaboration between Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Tanzania, University of Abuja in Nigeria and Kwame Nkurumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana with the hub in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
There are 4 strands to the project:
To develop a web-based database for health services and research, with standardized SCD phenotype definitions and ontologies (in collaboration with SADaCC at University of Cape Town)
To develop, implement and evaluate a resource-based, multi-level, “Guidelines for Management of SCD in SSA”
To organize training to develop human resource capacity in health services and research.
To plan research that will establish cohort studies and implementation research to evaluate preventive and therapeutic practices.
SPARCO Conceptual Framework
The Hub in Tanzania is responsible for overall coordination of SPARCO activities. Each country site has a site PI and site coordinator, together with members focusing on one of the 4 strands of the programme. Activities in each stand are co-ordinated across sites by 4 working groups, these are database , standards of care, skills development and research planning.
